林義傑世界超馬奪冠 Kevin Lin is world Champion !

第一屆世界極地超級馬拉松世界冠軍Made in Taiwan!

經過七天六夜兩百五十公里長征,世界四大極地超級馬拉松賽最終站「南極超級馬拉松」,在台灣時間二月一日清晨六時落幕,林義傑取得第三名並以「戈壁超級馬拉松賽」第三名、「智利阿他馬加寒漠超級馬拉松賽」第一名、「埃及撒哈拉超級馬拉松賽」第二名的積分,獲得首屆世界超級馬拉松四大巡迴賽總冠軍,也完成了將青天白日滿地紅國旗送到南極的任務。

迎戰冰風暴 歷經大風浪

賽前林義傑沒有足夠的時間與經費進行低溫的訓練,所幸萬能技術學院老師陳柏齡贊助一系列南極生態環境影片,讓他能預先透過影片熟悉當地的情況。賽前他利用在台灣時幾次寒流來襲的機會,穿著短褲、短袖在戶外練習,甚至上七星山、清境農場感受低溫,但這些遠遠不敵南極一刮風就降到攝氏零下二、三十度的情況,所以,他在一月二十六日第一站時就受了風寒。

林義傑的冰原歷險記,磨難非常也收穫極大。

他碰上南極半島刮起的大風雪,風速約有每小時一百公里,讓溫度驟降至攝氏零下三十四度,大會人員與選手被迫暫停繼續比賽,借住在Esperanza阿根廷研究站臨時搭建的伙食房裡;而在移動的過程中,乘坐的是橡皮艇,一有風浪就像電影中看到的劇情一樣搖搖晃晃;一度乘坐了十二個小時,吃盡苦頭。

暈船又感冒 單站拿第一

到了南極賽事第三站,所有選手經歷過四十個小時的冰風暴,加上十二個小時乘風破浪的折騰,於一月三十日早上抵達第三站的南雪特蘭群島之火山地型的迪斯伯遜島。

此役林義傑在感冒與暈船身體不適下,於單站四十二公里馬拉松的賽程拿下單站第一。

此趟冰原歷險記讓林義傑印象深刻的,就是邊跑邊看數百隻企鵝圍繞的奇景,他還拿著自己的大小便(因為南極是不允許有「人造」的污染),以及目睹有如「明天過後」電影的情節,瞬間進入冰天雪地的風暴中。

台灣這陣子,除了籠罩在新年愉悅的氣氛中,更增添不少好事,例如:李安導演入圍八項奧斯卡,還有林義傑送給台灣的「世界超馬王」新年禮物。

林義傑將於二月五日晚上九時五十分抵達台灣,接下來將準備今年九月挑戰人類首度徒步橫越六千公里撒哈拉沙漠壯舉。

此次冒險會由好萊塢影星麥特戴蒙之製片公司全程拍攝為紀錄片:Running The Sahara。

Kevin Lin, 28, Taiwan, Masters Degree Candidate in Sports PsychologyKevin is currently working towards his Masters Degree in Sports Psychology at Chung Cheng Uniersity in Taiwan. Before that he was a Physical Education teacher at a Taiwan high school. Kevin is an elite athlete and has been running since he was ten years old. He has completed many international marathon and ultramarathon events. Kevin won the Atacama Crossing in 2004 and placed second and third in the Sahara Race 2005 and Gobi March 2003, respectively. The Last Desert will be Kevin's fourth 4 Deserts event.


January 31, 11:00am -- The final stage has just begun with a 30 kilometer stage on King George Island. This stage is expected to take competitors over an ice glacier and through some small rivers before concluding at the coastline.

January 30, 8pm - Kevin Lin of Taiwan has won Stage 3 of The Last Desert, a 26 mile/42 kilometer marathon on Deception Island, a small volcanic island located in Antarctica. All competitors finished Stage 3 with Alasdair Morrison and Team Illinois finishing particularly strong.

Jan 30, 11am - Stage 3 has just kicked off on Deception Island, this will be a 42km stage. Weather conditions are currently ideal with partly sunny skies and mild temperatures.

January 29, 9am All competitors have finished stage 2, a 100 mile stage on Base Esperenza, except for three. Competitors now packing up and getting ready to return to the ship once the fog clears and winds subside. Once onboard, we will set sail for Deception Island for stage 3. A BIG THANK YOU goes out to the Argentineans on Base Ezperenza for allowing us into their home and giving us heat and shelter during the race.

January 28, 5pm Snow is now falling on competitors as they near the finish of a 100 mile stage on Esperenza, Antarctica. Scott Smith of the USA has just completed the stage in first place. Other competitors are expected to complete the stage within 12 hours. Competitors will then return to the ship for a shower for the first time in more than two days. The winds are still gusting making it questionable whether or not anyone can return to the ship.

Jan 28th 10am - After 100km, Scott Smith (USA) is in the lead followed by Kevin Lin (Taiwan), Chuck Walker (USA) and Brent Weigner (USA). Lisanne Dorion (USA) leads the womens division.

January 27, 7pm Competitors stepped foot on the Antarctic Peninsula this morning to run stage 2 of The Last Desert. 100 miles is currently being run in and around the Argentinian Base Esperenza in Hope Bay in 60 knot winds and temperatures just above freezing.

Jan 27, 3am - the ship is sailing towards Hope Bay. Scheduled arrival is 6am. Competitors will then run another stage while the weather is nice.

January 26, 8:00pm -- The Last Desert is now underway with a 10 kilometer warm up run on King George Island. The ship's anchor has just risen and the ship is now headed for Esperenza on the Antarctic Peninsula. Tomorrow competitors will face an 80 kilometer run through one of the most spectacular landscapes on Earth.

January 26, 12:30pm -- Competitors have just landed in Antarctica after a smooth flight across the Drake Passage. Several competitors celebrated with Pisco Sours and Bailey's. Competitors are now en route to their private ship where they will prepare for the kick-off of The Last Desert which will take place around 5:00 pm with a 22 kilometer run. History will be made with the first ultramarathon to be held on Antarctica.

January 26, 8:50am -- We are now on the plane about to take off for King George Island. We were rushed through the airport to catch a short window of opportunity to land at King George Island. Everyone send their love to family and friends. The next update wil be in four hours from Antarctica.

January 26, 8:00am -- The latest word is that the weather conditions are favorable at King George Island. The group is now en route to the airport. Another update will be posted from the runway at the Punta Arenas Airport.

January 26, 3:00am - The King George Island weather has cleared during the night. The next scheduled departure is 8am to the airport.

January 25, 1:30 pm -- The flight to Antarctica has been delayed yet again as fog has rolled in. The earliest we can now leave is 3:00 pm. Fortunately RacingThePlanet has been able to secure space in a C130 cargo plane to ship excess cargo including Diet Coke, beer, Chilean wine and special snacks.

January 25, 10:45am - We are off! The call has come in and we have a clear window to travel. Competitors are off to the airport.

January 25, 8:15am - All standing by. Weather expected to worsen on King George Island so flight delayed. Next weather update will be at 11am.

January 25, 6:45am - Competitors arriving at meeting point with gear to find out if plane will depart as scheduled.

January 24, 10:15pm - Poor weather forecasted for Wednesday morning which may effect flight departure. Competitors meeting at 7:15am for flight and weather update.

January 24 - All competitors except two have arrived in Punta Arenas. Competitors meeting today to purchase rubber boots for Zodiac landings.

January 23, 2006 - Last minute course details being finalized. Competitors are relaxing in Punta Arenas, Chile.

January 22 - Most competitors have already arrived in Punta Arenas, Chile, two days before race start.

January 19 - RacingThePlanet management has departed for Chile. They will be stopping in Santiago to meet with the Minister of Tourism before continuing on to Punta Arenas for The Last Desert.

January 17, Hong Kong - Simon Murray, oldest explorer to complete a self-supported trek to the South Pole, sends off RacingThePlanet headquarters staff with best wishes and last minute advice for Antarctica.

January 11, 2006 - Hong Kong-based competitor, Alasdair Morrison, becomes the first to depart for The Last Desert, making his way to Punta Arenas via New York. All competitors will congregate in Puntas Arenas on January 24.

January 10, 2006 - The weather at all Antarctica race locations is currrently near freezing (32 F or 0 C).

January 3, 2006. NHK, Japan's top television station, has broadcast a segment on Japanese competitors, Satoru Otsuka and Masashi Hayakawa.
