The Long Run (2000)
Starring: Armin Mueller-Stahl, Nthati Moshesh Director: Jean Stewart Rating (8 customer reviews)

One of the comment in amazon:

The province of the soul, February 18, 2004
Reviewer:

Stephen A. Haines (Ottawa, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews In 1942, thousands of POWs were marched along the Philippines' Bataan Peninsula in the infamous "Death March". Thirst, hunger and fatigue plagued them in scorching heat. As guards watched impassively, the weaker fell by the wayside. Today, similar numbers follow the similar tracks with similar results. Only now we call it exercise. Instead of being instigated by imperial armies, supermarkets and auto rentals now act as sponsors. Instead of guards, the trekkers are goaded on by cheering spectators, only slightly less indifferent to the plight of the fallen.

The background to one of these dramas of endeavour and endurance is ably portrayed in The Long Run. In this film, the locale is South Africa, not the Philippines. Instead of steaming jungle, it's city roads and pollution. The quest, however, isn't just survival, it's winning. With exercise, winning means training, and training means coaching. Armin Mueller-Stahl plays Berry Bohmer, a brickyard employee coaching a team of runners. Encountering a young woman jogging, he sees immense promise in her. After some initial difficulties, Christine [Nthati Moshesh] accepts him as her trainer. The goal is winning the Comrades Marathon, a gruelling 90 km run across Natal Province, South Africa.

It's not a straightforward enterprise. Christine, a homeless illegal immigrant, moves in with Berry, scandalising the neighbourhood. It's hard to decide which of them is more prim in the relationship. His own situation becomes precarious when the brickyard owner wants to advance the cause of Black African management. Christine, although a natural runner, has no disciplined experience. Berry must start her at the beginning. Director Jean Stewart balances these disparate forces with finesse. From the opening scene, the tension of this race is vividly obvious. "Forget about the pain!", Berry tells his team, but you are confronted with the stress involved in this enterprise throughout the film. Whatever Moshesh's running experience in real life, she admirably demonstrates her abilities as she paces out bush roads and dodges coppers. Stewart places every scene in proper context, from distant views along rural tracks to the race's conclusion in Durban. Long distance shots of the Natal countryside impart a strong sense of the universality of distance running.

Finally, after no few tribulations, the race is run. The key point is Cowie's, a hill rising beyond a deceptive flat track. "It has killed thousands!", says Berry. Christine, determined, has her own approach. The race opens before sunrise, but "it'll get hot later today" intones the announcer. As the day begins, after the race starts, Stewart captures the easy mood of those first minutes. As time passes and the pace picks up, the full scope of the challenge is manifested. Runners are seen beside the track, crumpled with exhaustion. Christine's own support team members falter. There's nothing foregone about the conclusion - remember Cool Running? Dear all,

First of all may I take this opportunity to thanks all of you to give the great support to make Comrades Marathon to become realistic for BDP Asia Pacific.

It's a tough run but wonderful, you will experience to run with 12,000 runners from worldwide, people around you are so cheerful and polite by calling your name, give you an ultimate spirit support and send you a very warn regard...... etc.

My finishing time is 11hrs 32min which is out of my expectation below 11hrs.

Here is some of my personal valuable experience want to share with everyone who are interested to participate for comrades run in the near future.

1) TRAIN, TRAIN, TRAIN............ NO TRAINING NO RUNNING, TRAIN AS MUCH AS YOU CAN. You must train yourself to make your physically fix enough to support you for the challenge. Training in the PROPER way is very important, remember, Comrades run is always up and down on the hilly area, please never ever only train/run on the flat road.

2) MIND SET READINESS, your mind set will lead your physically performance. Be remember, you must always set your mind to have strong determination for achievement no doubt sometime your mind set will lead your to the negative thinking.

3) PATIENCE, be readied to face your physical paint and never ever give up.

4) NEW ENVIRONMENT, Comrades may be the very new running environment for the 1st time runner, runner must be able to accept/cope/face the totally new running environment.

Regret to inform you my brother do complete the run but over the time limit (over 12 mins), he is no entitle to get any prize from Comrades.

My PJ half marathon experience:Dare to fail

Dare to fail
My worst half marathon, but dare to face this situation,it was not easy decision take part or not, cause my old injury of left knee came back.I got this after PAR relay recovery run.I even can't ran 2km,it was so pain,as I have experience before,I just rest and working for the crazy world cup.

I told myself, even not enough sleep,I can tahan, even not carbo loading ,I also can tahan, not water I also can tahan, cramp,I also can tahan .But I have to accept the fact of this injury need to treat it very well,I must take a rest, better a chance run in Penang marathon.

I was so motivate by CCHOO calling from South Africa, must can't easily give up before the finishing point,so,with strong ecourage from some friends,I make dicision even I know I will die kau-kau lat at this race,U know what time I ready my bib on vest ,hehee...around 1.30am...cause still worry ....!! hahaha

Did warm up as usual on track, then heading to starting point, met with OX friends like Wan Lin,Lye,Blue Ameba,RhoWen and Phyllis.I was planning if my knee pain at the early stage,I will withdrew from this race, just DNF lah,but oh...first 5km,run slow but still shook..haha,after 5km,start felt pain on my left knee liao...,kena potong vege by many runners, even Phyllis also overtoke me,then follow by Jamie, many others,I have to change the pain feeling, plan to give up,turn back by short cut,but miss to turn right,hahaha...that die liao..cause I just realise when the hotel saujana..aiyoooooo..how ah ? hmm...my pain is worst, kau lat ,what to do ? After put some sloan's on left knee,I toke my DC again, just enjoy with snap foto, the ppls who on the return, manage to snap BP two fast fellas, dam fast, then follow by Toh,Chong,Captim, many others....etc.

My pace just keep as low as possible, don't to extra my pain,so,after roundabout I manage to say hello to many runners,I thought I can manage to finish the race within 2:15,but after return pass roundabout,I hit the wall due to no training,so use again sloan's,then ran slow up the flyover, the way go down, one fella jia lat,I think is because of less glukosa liao, fell down and injure both of his knee, the most worry of us who stop to help him,is because he can't answer us,JIA LAT !! Even his name also can't spoke, then I help to stop the car who kindly to stop and help, got one malay Kenara stop and later follow by one official car,Hopefully this runner will fine later.

I ran and walk ,with Ameba, but she also suffer, then I just keep running on,my feeling is the worst pj half marathon, even my worst half marathon in my life will happen, reached the left turn,my time is just pass 2:15,hahaha..just slow slow lah, what to do ??

When i approach to stadium, many friends cheers for me,the first time I felt the track for me is not for speed run, slow slow slow slow like a turtle, dam sad in my heart, cause I can saw my PMs gang spot me,ask me to go,aiya, just pura-pura concetrate don want to look at them..hahaha !!

While I almost finish,Phyllis cheers for me,thanks !! My lousy and worst in my life 2:21:41,I am sure this will stand as I live,if my condition is not well,I will not the risk, lucky my left knee injury no more serious, only little pain,I think need about another 2 weeks to recover,I will wait with patient...looking for 30 July Penang Marathon !

Congrate to who did PR and enjoy this PJ Half marathon, hope u all enjoy this year pj half marathon.

PAR relay run at KLCC 3/6/06

That is PM's Pia spirit ! (Thanks for KC'S photo)

Keep away Ronnie from first lap.

Turbo at final 200metres.Too late,my 2nd lap time is only 6'02,so sad !!!

I felt very very jia lat after cross the 700m mark, can't move !!!

Date:3/6/06
Time:7.30am
Place:KLCC Park
Participant team: 9 teams.
My team:Chen replace by SL at last minute cause due to Dengue. Our team line up ,Kenny Tan,SL,SJ and Me.

I just ran two slow laps for warm up,excited to see many team join in a race for relay event. As I like much relay event,my heart and my mind was so excited.

I knew after Chen pull out ,my team only aim for top 3 will be enough and happy.Even Kenny arrived late, but his pia spirit is show in the race, dam salute him...!! He did it in 4'46 and 5'30,total 2 laps time is 10'19,very fast.

SJ's eldest sister SL also did in a good two laps sub 6 minutes ,5'45 and 5'50,total time is 11'35,thanks for her effort to replace Chen, even she need to rush other place at 8.15am.

As usual ,SJ is very pia in the race, appreciate she turbo kau-kau lat to overtake Ah Loong, then boost me a little big, altough it is only about 10metres.I received the baton from SJ,and cheer by many friends, may be they thought me can fight with my captim ? Oppps...no.....!!

Once I got the baton from SJ,I must admit that little kc lah, cause I am sure Ronnie will overtake me anytime. But I don't care,I just relax and concetrate in the race, even at bridge met Phua Kok Hua,no time to say hello, but so surprise Ronnie didn't overtake me,that time I thought my pace is about 5 minutes plus, that was wrong, why I did't realise ?!

As Kenny Tan advise me before I got the baton from SJ,he said,u must pia and pia until can't breathe..opps ? I still keep pace with consistent, felt still can breathe.I was so surprise Ronnie just follow very near behind me,but I didn't look back..hehe !!

Until the first lap, everbody cheer for me,I just concetrate my mind, but I felt my pressure became more and more, cause I felt my stamina gone ..haha,then just keep my pace lah,Ronnie finally overtoke me after just about 200metres(it is correct ?) ,then I puncit kau-kau lat liao,my leg is sore,no power at all,but still can breathe lah....if I pia like that day 4'53 PR also can't chase Ronnie,so my feeling is hoping the race finish asap,I know my timing will be very bad,6'02 is a bad time for me !! Felt sad my 2nd lap timing...but it is good experience as I didn't train for 2 laps, always train for 1 lap and 3 laps.

Thanks for everybody to take part, plus sponsor and Penguin and OX team to join for this relay run !!
